Statistics Engine
Information used for the prison statistics engine was obtained from two separate documents. Statistics for the number of prisoners was taken from Table 2 in Prisoners in 2007, published by the Bureau of Justice Statistics. Statistics for the total cost per day was derived from Page 20 in Public Safety, Public Spending, published by The Pew Charitable Trusts. The current national average annual operational cost per prisoner is $23,876. From this number, the national average daily operational cost of $65.41 was determined and used as the multiplier for determining the total cost per day for each state. Please contact for questions.
